International dialing format helper for U.S. numbers

Most failed support calls start with a small formatting mistake. For U.S. and Canada numbers, use country code +1, the three-digit area code, and the seven-digit local number.

When this page helps

This helper is intentionally simple: it gives you the format to use before opening the browser dialer.

Example format(212) 555-0199

+1 212 555 0199

Steps before you call

  1. Remove spaces, parentheses, and domestic trunk prefixes.
  2. Confirm the number has a three-digit area code.
  3. Dial it as +1 followed by the area code and local number.

Practical tips

  • Extensions are usually entered after the call connects.
  • For toll-free numbers, keep the same +1 format.
  • If a published number starts with 011, that is usually an international access prefix, not part of the U.S. number.

Useful official sources

Use official pages for sensitive calls, especially banking, tax, immigration, airline, insurance, or identity questions.
