Can AI Call a Business for You? Meet CallAlternative for Agents
Explore CallAlternative’s upcoming MCP calling beta: Max-plan access, captured answers and transcripts, and the 10× AI minute rate.
Yes—an AI agent connected to a phone-calling service can call a business and ask for information on your behalf. It needs a calling tool, permission to use it, and a clear question.
That is the next chapter for CallAlternative.
We built CallAlternative to help people call real phone numbers from their browser. Now we’re extending that idea to AI agents: give your assistant a business number and a simple question, and let it make the call.
We’re introducing CallAlternative for agents as an upcoming open beta for factual questions and a few explicitly authorized, fee-free actions. Once released, eligible Max customers can use it without individual beta approval. You’ll need an active Max subscription, an email-verified account, available calling credit, and a compatible configured agent. Agent calling is being prepared for the next release. Public activation still requires live verification.
Configured calls persist captured answers and available dialogue for review in Calls or through MCP. Live verification, public activation, and native one-click connectors remain separate.
Your assistant can research the business. Now give it a way to call.
You’ve found the hotel. You’ve compared the shops. You’ve read the business’s website.
But one detail is still missing.
What time is checkout? Is parking available? What are the office’s Friday opening hours?
Sometimes the answer requires a phone call.
CallAlternative’s agent-calling feature is designed to handle that small but useful step. A connected agent can submit a specific question, initiate an eligible call, and check its progress. Configured calls also save captured answers and transcripts for retrieval.
The business receives a regular phone call. It does not need to install CallAlternative or connect an AI integration.
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek: bring your agent
We want CallAlternative to become the calling alternative for agents, wherever those agents run.
You might use OpenAI’s ChatGPT and GPT models, Anthropic’s Claude, Google Gemini, or DeepSeek. You might build with Grok, Mistral, or another model. CallAlternative’s integration is designed around a shared calling interface, so the underlying model does not have to define your choice of phone service.
The connection happens through MCP, the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets AI applications connect to external tools. Learn about MCP.
There is one practical requirement: your agent application must support the connection and be configured to use CallAlternative. Using a particular model or opening its chat app does not automatically enable phone calls. These are examples of model and assistant ecosystems, not a list of individually verified chat-app integrations.
Choose your model. Connect your agent. Give it a calling task.
Once the open beta launches, existing and new eligible Max customers can connect without a separate invitation or account approval.
What could you ask an AI calling agent to do?
For information-gathering calls, ask one clear factual question per call.
Examples of the kinds of requests we’re building toward include:
- “Call the office and confirm its Friday opening hours.”
- “Call the hotel and ask what time checkout is.”
- “Call the shop and ask whether customer parking is available.”
These examples describe the information-gathering workflow we’re building toward. Configured calls expose capture status, the captured answer when available, and role-labelled dialogue.
A good request includes a business phone number and one specific objective. That keeps the task clear and gives the answer-delivery workflow a specific objective.
If you have several questions, start with the most important one.
What the current calling foundation supports
The calling foundation supports the following steps for a configured, eligible account once the service is enabled. Public beta activation remains pending:
- Give your connected agent the business number and a question.
- The agent submits the calling request to CallAlternative. Account eligibility, supported destinations, available minutes, and calling limits still apply.
- CallAlternative handles the phone-call workflow. Your agent can check the call’s progress.
- Your agent polls the call/job status, including whether the call completed or failed. A completed status does not mean the business’s answer is available.
The MCP result flow exposes call status and separately reports answer capture as pending, captured, no answer, or unavailable. It returns the captured answer and available transcript for the exact call. A provider result may arrive after the call ends; check that call again rather than starting another call.
Even with answer capture, a submitted request cannot guarantee a useful answer: the business may be closed, the line may be busy, or nobody may pick up.
What is included in the open beta?
The planned beta supports one factual question or one explicitly authorized, fee-free reservation confirmation, reservation reschedule, or appointment cancellation.
Structured actions require the exact reference and customer name. Rescheduling also requires one future date, time, and time zone. See the agent guide for the required details.
New bookings, reservation cancellations, purchases, payments, account changes, and sensitive personal information remain outside scope.
Agent calling is being prepared for the next release, with public activation dependent on live verification. After launch, access requires Max, with standard account, available-minute, destination, and calling-limit checks. Connecting a compatible agent is still required. We’ll share launch and setup details as the beta progresses.
Which plan and minutes does AI calling use?
Agentic calling and MCP access require Max. Basic and Basic Plus do not include this access. Review or upgrade your plan in Billing. A plan-access error guides you to Billing instead of asking you to retry a call.
New AI calls use the same calling-credit pool at 10× the ordinary minute rate, after rounding billable duration up to a whole minute: 30 seconds uses 10 plan minutes; 61 seconds uses 20. Human calling keeps its ordinary minute rate.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI call a business on my behalf?
Yes, when an AI agent has access to a configured phone-calling tool. CallAlternative is preparing an open beta for eligible Max customers. It will support factual questions and narrowly authorized, fee-free actions.
Can ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or DeepSeek use CallAlternative?
The integration is designed to work independently of the underlying model through MCP. Compatibility depends on the agent application, its tool support, configuration, standard account eligibility, and service availability. This does not mean that every named chat application already has a ready-to-use CallAlternative connector.
Will my agent receive the business’s answer?
Configured calls save captured answers and available transcripts for review in Calls or through MCP. A call may instead report pending, no answer, or unavailable. Public activation still requires live verification.
Does the business need CallAlternative?
No. The business receives a regular phone call at its phone number.
Can the agent book or cancel something for me?
New bookings are outside scope. The planned beta supports explicitly authorized, fee-free reservation confirmation, reservation rescheduling, and appointment cancellation with exact details. Reservation cancellation remains outside scope. See the agent guide.
Can I start using AI calling immediately?
Not yet. AI calling is an upcoming open beta being prepared for the next release. Public activation still requires live verification. Once it launches, eligible Max customers can use it without individual beta approval. Create an account, verify your email, choose Max, have available calling credit, and connect a compatible agent. Signup alone does not configure that connection.
A new way to make the call
CallAlternative started with a simple idea: make real phone calls easier to access.
We’re taking that idea into agent workflows. Your assistant can help you find a business, compare options, and identify the missing detail. We’re building the connection that lets it ask that question by phone.
Your agent brings the question. CallAlternative brings the calling connection.
